Paleontology and geology

During the Silurian, most of Alaska as we know it today had not yet begun to assemble. Marine conditions were widespread, although the record of these rocks is rare and scattered. Terrestrial rocks from this time period are primarily those of a series of volcanic islands. Carbonate platforms derived from corals, molluscs and other organisms formed in the shallow waters surrounding these islands.
