Paleontology and geology

A shallow tropical sea covered Colorado during the Ordovician, and the resulting sedimentary rocks include sandstone, shale, and dolostone. A mudstone near Canon City in central Colorado contains abundant bone fragments from some of the earliest fish, and another site nearby is known for its diversity of marine trace fossils.
