Paleontology and geology

Although not shown on this map, layers of Permian rocks are preserved in the most southeastern parts of Ohio and indicate that the area was fully terrestrial at this time. Lakes, rivers, and other habitats dominated the landscape; fossils of ferns and horsetails are common.
