Paleontology and geologyA second episode of mountain building (the Acadian Orogeny) occurred, along with increased igneous activity, metamorphism, and faulting. Limy sediments accumulated in a marine environment in westernmost North Carolina. Fossils are rare due to metamorphism during later stages of the Appalachian mountain building. The scattered exposures in central and northeastern North Carolina shown on this map are primarily granitic intrusions. |
