Paleontology and geology

During the Silurian, the mountain building, known as the Taconic Orogeny, that began in the Ordovician continued. This resulted in intense metamorphism and deformation of the rocks and the development of a basin in westernmost North Carolina, in which sands and muds were deposited. No recognizable fossils have been found in North Carolina from this time period.
