Paleontology and geology

Sedimentary rocks of Jurassic age are found in the Connecticut River Valley, which runs through the central part of the state. These rocks originally formed as sediments deposited in streams and lakes that filled rift valleys. The rifting occurred as the supercontinent of Pangea continued to pull apart. Vertebrate Fossils found within these sediments include those of insects, freshwater molluscs, fish, and both the bones and footprints of dinosaurs and crocodile-like reptiles. One of the best places to see exceptional Jurassic dinosaur footprints is at Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill.
